Clouds can be public or private and offer any number of IT capabilities “as a Service”. Given this variety, just what does cloud mean in terms of infrastructure?

A critical but often overlooked dimension of cloud architecture is the public Internet. Typical roles of the API Middleware layer are:

• Provide a connectivity bridge between the requestors and the back end systems of record
• Handle any format and mapping requirements between differing formats and protocols at either end
• Satisfy systems management, security, analytic and audit requirements for proper governance

In some API architecture implementations, the API Middleware layer is fairly minimal. This is the case for example where the ‘back-end’ systems of record are already packaged as programmable services, perhaps accessed through RESTful interfaces.
